This continuing education presentation will review the epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the impact of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on mortality. Pharmacological classifications and formulations of HAART will be outlined with a specific focus on the efficacy, safety, and therapeutic utility of newly approved antiretrovirals. Guideline updates on the prevention and management of HIV regarding pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, initial treatment of HIV-infected individuals, and opportunistic infection prophylaxis will be discussed.
